Storyline:
In Colombia just after the Great War, an old man falls from a ladder; dying, he professes great love for his wife. After the funeral, a man calls on the widow - she dismisses him angrily. Flash back more than 50 years to the day Florentino Ariza, a telegraph boy, falls in love with Fermina Daza, the daughter of a mule trader. Ariza is persistent, writing her constantly, serenading, speaking poetically of love. Her father tries to keep them apart, and then, one day, she sees this love as an illusion. She's soon married to Urbino, a cultured physician, and for years, Ariza carries a torch, finding solace in the arms of women, loving none. After Urbino's fall, are Ariza's hopes delusional?

I don't even know where to begin with the reviews on this one because this is simply a beautiful love story! Not a date movie, but a true romance that you would see with your wife or husband. It has such strong romance in it that it would be a little too much to see with someone you just met. Trust me on this one. if you want to know what LOVE is really all about, see this!! A must see movie!! You are going to Laugh a lot in it because of its great humor but you will cry to because the Love that is being displayed is so beautiful. Just a Great Movie, better than Titanic. What are you waiting for, SEE IT!!!

I went to see this movie this afternoon despite the critics reviews I've read. It is one of my fave books of all time and the movie was so beautiful - really showed the languid, sensual side of latin america that I longed to see on the screen. I am baffled by the critics who panned this movie. Did they not go in realizing that this movie is a PERIOD EPIC ROMANCE? Maybe because I went in with lower expectations (which I always try to do with book adaptations), but I thought Newell delivered - the score was breathtaking, the cinematography literally took my breath away (the part where they are riding over the mountains of Colombia while Shakira sings in the background - muy bonita!), Javier was such a perfect Florentino - just as I had imagined him. I really hope that people are not turned off from the critics on this one. I think once real people (who believe in love and romance) start seeing this movie that the word of mouth with help give this movie the kudos that it deserves.

Who ever rated this a "oh no" has no appreciation for fine movies. They probably gave knocked up a better rating. I read the book and lived in Colombia, this is a very accurate movie about life in Colombia in the early parts of the 20th century. The story may not be appreciated without some understanding of the culture and life in those times. The father was the final decision maker and unless father approved it was not done. I would not recommend this film for the younger or immature crowd.

Love in the Time of Cholera is a unique movie that portrays the meaning of real love. The story engages the viewer in the sequence of actions that the main character undergoes, which makes the movie entertaining and enjoyable. The best part is how the Colombian culture hasn't changed a bit, the social classes, the good humor, and the meaning of love is still the same until today. I have to congratulate Newell on this one, it is one of the films I have seen this year.
